We were in the Rapid City, SD area in August of 2003. So, of course, I shot many photographs of Mount Rushmore. Writing a page about your visit there? Need a background for it? Well, here you are! I also got some great shots from the tunnels in the Black Hills too. This one just seemed to personify it all.

Here's a few fun facts about Mount Rushmore:

• Mount Rushmore was dedicated as a National Memorial on October 1, 1925.
• On October 4, 1927 the first work of carving began. In March of 1941 the sculptor (Gutzon Borglum) died suddenly and his son (Lincoln) took over for the next seven months, until funds ran out. The carving was shut down and the presidential faces were left as they stood.
• Washington's face was dedicated on July 4, 1934.
• Thomas Jefferson's face was dedicated in 1936. President Franklin Roosevelt was present.
• Abraham Lincoln's face was dedicated on the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Constitutionon September 17, 1937.
• In 1939, Theodore Roosevelt’s face was dedicated.
• The Figures of the Presidents were never completed. It was intended for the sculpture to be not just their faces, but instead to the waistline.
• The mountain's presidential busts are 60 feet tall
• Not one single worker was killed during the construction of Mount Rushmore
